JUNGIAN LECTURE: The Song of Inanna: A Journey into the Sacred Feminine Archetype through Mythology, Psychology, and Art

by Liliana Kleiner, PhD

“Inanna destroys what is forbidden to destroy and creates what is forbidden to create, changing man into woman and woman into man.” ~ What significance does Inanna reveal to us in our troubled times?

The Myth of Inanna, the great Sumerian goddess of the Middle East, was written before the Bible and represents a psyche in search of wholeness, calling for the integration of all opposites, a vision very much needed for today’s divided world.

Inanna was central in the religions and popular consciousness of all ancient Middle Eastern societies at a very critical time in the history of civilization when Goddess spirituality and matriarchal societies were eradicated by patriarchal monotheism. The sacred feminine has been cut off from us, repressed and devalued during the last 5 thousand years of patriarchal history. We are called to address this imbalance between the masculine and feminine Godheads in our psyches and societies to create a real, lasting change in our individual and collective consciousness.

Inanna’s stories arise from a group psyche that felt and saw the evolution of patriarchy and its shadow and responded with a vision of integration, unity and wholeness. Mythologies carry the wisdom of ancient people, the bones of our present minds. Inanna’s stories address the split between matter and spirit; they tell about the union of love and passion and the sacredness of the female body and show the struggle for the union of the upper and lower worlds. Her quest transcends the ego and society, reaching into the unknown and its spiritual mystery. Her journey is about rebirth from the depths of the Unconscious, a quest that culminates in the creation of a new woman and a new man.

As an artist and Jungian therapist, my images and ideas encircling Inanna’s mythology are the fruits of a decade of intense research and personal explorations of this remarkable eye-opening legacy that has been mostly buried and denied in modern history. Her ancient wisdom is likely to revive feelings and insights that are buried deep in our collective unconscious for generations, opening new doors of perceptions into a consciousness of wholeness, embracing the rejected Sacred Feminine in its Totality, and encouraging participation with all life on Earth.

*We offer a social study group in the following days after each lecture. If interested, please email cvjungsociety@gmail.com for more info or sign up at the event.
